So you are the Admin of a Facebook Group and an Admin of a Facebook Event and you would like to merge the two so the Group is the Host of your Event? Sounds simple, but is it?

According to Facebook logic it is of grave importance which is created first, and if you made the event first you’re out of luck.

I wonder if they also think the Chicken came before the Egg?

Facebook FAQ erroneously suggests:

In order for an event to appear in the Events section of a group’s page, you need to set the group as host of the event from the Edit Event page. In order to do this, you will need to be the admin of both the group and the event.

When you go to edit the event, you’ll find there isn’t a place to select your group as the host. Now what? … Facebook’s Blackhole Customer Service? Good Luck.

The answer is so simple you may kick yourself for not trying it sooner.

Each group is given a “gid” aka group id number, when you visit your group you can find this appended to the address url. Copy your “gid” number and go edit your event.

http://www.facebook.com/events/create.php?gid=[your group number]

On the edit event page append &gid=[group id number] to the address. As you can see the event already has an “eid” aka event id number so add the “gid” after the “eid” with an “&”.

http://www.facebook.com/events/create.php?eid=[event id number]

Becomes:

http://www.facebook.com/events/create.php?eid=[event id number]&gid=[group  id number]

Reload the page and you’ll now notice there is now a check box that says “Invite Members of the host group [group name].

Hit “Save Event” and return to your group. Now under the “Events” tab on your Group page you will find your event listed.

Voila! You have now accomplished what many think is impossible.

Note: Even though the event is now listed on your group, when you make future edits to the event make sure you add the “gid” on the address bar if it is missing before saving changes.

Thanks so much Michael, you had the only posting I could find that actually worked!

Oops I lied. As soon as I sign out, it reverts. Sigh.

Sorry to hear that it no longer works, I successfully used that solution back when I wrote the post to combine a reunion group and event that were created out of the facebook required (and undocumented) order. I’m sure a lot has changed at facebook since then.
